Chapter Eleven

CUPID’S COUNTDOWN: Five days until Valentine’s

VALENTINE’S HINT FROM THE HEART: Honesty is the key. It will open many doors.

FEBRUARY FUNNY:

Question: Why did the sharpener love the pencil?

Answer: Because life without it was pointless.

“You’re not going to believe this.” Savannah looked at the clock and cringed. Even though Adam was probably getting ready for work, it was too early to telephone someone.

She heard a groan, and the ruffle of sheets, like he was turning over to check his bedside clock.

“I’ll believe just about anything before six o’clock in the morning.” His slurred words made her grin.

“Yeah, sorry about that. You’ll definitely want to hear this, though. Wild Wind Ranch, a farm about a mile outside of the city emailed me. Supposedly they’re longtime rivals in the birthday party circuit with Saucy, and they want in on the secret valentine project.”

“What? That’s great. You’re really onto something with this aren’t you?” His voice was more alert than it had been a moment earlier.

“We’re onto something. If we’re able to get more businesses onboard, think of all the experiences these kids could have.” Since Peter’s death she’d just gone through the motions where the kids club was concerned. The donations had been more something she was obligated to do. Now though, there was excitement behind what they were doing. Maybe it was having a partner to work side by side with again. Or perhaps agreeing to the expansion had widened her scope. Kids would be benefiting from the space her crew designed and built for years to come. They might forget the rubber balls and pencil grips once the Fourteen Days of Valentines was over, but the experiences would provide them with memories that would last much longer.

“Might not be limited to the month of February either.” Adam mused.

“I like it. The more businesses that get involved, the more opportunities the kids will have for mentors and solid role models. Anyway, I’ll let you get ready for work. Just wanted to give you a heads-up to grab your cowboy hat and riding boots, because that’s on the itinerary for Tuesday afternoon. I passed along your email address, so a representative from the ranch will send over liability waivers and pamphlets with suggestions on what to wear to get the most out of the trail ride.”

“Thanks, Savannah. For yesterday and today. Will I see you for the pizza-making class?”

“I never pass on pizza. See you then.” She sighed when they hung up. The reason for her call was twofold. Yes, she’d wanted to share the good news with Adam, but she also wanted to gauge the temperature between them. Yesterday, she had been caught up in the moment. Had almost kissed Adam when he’d made it clear he only wanted a friend. She had no right to feel disappointment when he moved away. None whatsoever. He’d made his stance on relationships more than clear. He’d reached out for her help because of the kids club. She’d been rude to not take his wishes into consideration.
